Plan 23 is a closed‑loop cooling flush plan for single mechanical seals defined by API 682 standard. Driven by the pumping ring integrated in the mechanical seal, process fluid inside the seal chamber circulates in a closed circuit. The fluid flows through an external heat exchanger for heat dissipation and returns back to the seal chamber, continuously removing frictional heat from seal faces and realizing precise temperature control of seal chamber.

Typical components consist of heat exchanger, temperature indicator, vent valve and drain valve.

Compared with Plan 21, Plan 23 brings lower thermal load, lower risk of heat exchanger fouling, greatly reduced cooling‑water consumption and higher operating efficiency.

Application Scope: Suitable for high‑temperature, clean and low‑abrasive services, widely applied for hot water, boiler feed water and hot hydrocarbon. It is applicable for operating sites with sufficient shaft speed for pumping‑ring circulation and process fluid with minimum solid abrasives.

This piping plan increases vapor pressure margin, optimizes lubrication condition of seal faces and mitigates coking risk, so as to effectively extend service life of mechanical seals. It is a preferred seal support configuration for high‑temperature pump equipment.
